Grand Final Win for 6th Grade

The Maitland 6th Grade team have done it again. Thanks to a great effort from Gary Urquhart and Matt Ford and others, the team are Major Premiers for 3 years running and Minor Premiers for the last 2 years. The team had to dig deep to hold out Tigers who had a number of young players with speed and skills on their side. Gary’s great goal off a short corner in the second half was enough to seal the win as well as some great defence by the fullbacks and halves.

Maitland also won the Second Division Club Championship due to the results achieved by the lower 3 grades who all made the finals as did 2nd Grade and PHL. It was a great season and we should pay tribute to the committee who organised the teams and functions. Without their time and effort we would not have a club and not be able to enjoy this great game of hockey.

Also congratulations to Nathan Baker who was the top goal scorer in 2nd grade.

Norths PHL who were very lucky to win against Maitland in the final, won against Souths in the Grand Final.

Results for Finals

Sunday Sepember 18

4th Grade WF 10.30am V Colts     Maitland lost 3-0  4th grade had a great season and were unlucky no to make the Grand Final. When they played well they were unbeatable. The young players in the side will improve with the experience of getting to the finals and this team  should do well next year.

2nd Grade EF 1.30pm V Souths   Maitland lost 5-4 2nd grade were switched on for a big game. We started off ok but got 2 early goals down. We had been in this situation before and come out of it, so we knew we could come back from that. I think the 2 goals was a bit of a wake up call for us, so we started to play the hockey that we knew we were capable of. As we started to throw the ball around we found some holes in the Souths defence. This passing game resulted in 2 goals of our own. On the stroke of half time Souths were awarded a penalty stroke which they converted giving them a 3-2 half time lead. We had a chat at half time about not getting away from our game of throwing the ball around. The second half started well until Souths got another goal giving them an early 4-2 lead. With our season on the line all of Maitland 2nd grade lifted and showed some amazing character and fight. We levelled up the scores midway through the second half due to some great running and leading from our forwards and midfield. With a draw looking the likely scenario Souths jagged a late goal to give them the upper hand. We tried as hard as we could to get the equaliser however it wasn’t to be. Everybody in the team tried as hard as they could, and to come back twice from being 2 goals down is an awesome effort, a lot of teams would have shut up shop and admitted defeat but the attitude and commitment of the guys to keep pushing is a credit to them all.

PHL  EF 3pm V Norths   Maitland lost 2-1   Maitland led for much of  the game and were the better team on the day. They defended brilliantly and put Norths under consistent pressure. A couple of decisions by the umpires and some bad luck lost them the match. They really deserved to get to the Grand Final in 2011. Despite this loss they had a great season playing really well against the top teams but sometimes letting themselves down against lower ranked sides. There is no doubt they can be premiers if they play consistently next season. Best players included Hugh Lightbody, Pete and Ben Urquhart, Matt Hoosen, Matt Brown, Chris Collier, Brett Gallagher, Damien Schweinberger and Nathan Baker.
